And still more bad kings Rick won’t be like
Terrible kings, both real and fictional, are often characterized by their profound cruelty, incompetence, or descent into madness, which leads to immense suffering for their subjects. For example:
REAL - King Leopold II of Belgium (1835–1909)
Though a constitutional monarch in Belgium, Leopold II was the absolute ruler of the Congo Free State as his private property. His regime in the Congo was associated with a reign of terror involving forced labor, brutal mutilations, and mass murder, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 10 million people.
BONUS REAL - King John of England (1166–1216)
Often depicted as a villain (notably in the ROBIN HOOD legends), King John is historically criticized for his untrustworthiness, heavy taxation, and diplomatic failures which led to conflict with his nobles and the loss of English territories in France. His actions ultimately led to the signing of the Magna Carta, a foundational document for limiting a monarch's power.
FICTIONAL - Macbeth (from Shakespeare's Macbeth)
Driven by prophecy and ambition, Macbeth murders the rightful King Duncan and descends into a tyrannical and paranoid rule. He becomes a murderous tyrant, ordering the deaths of Banquo, the Macduff family, and others to secure his unstable power, ultimately leading to his downfall.
